Really.I grew up with a couch in our living room. My grandma had a couch. All of my aunt's had couches. All of my friend's homes had couches. I myself had some form of a couch in every home I've ever had. Until yesterday!

My thought on this. Minimalism is something unique to the each individual person. There are no rules. When you create a minimal home you utilize everything in said home or cherish it because it brings you happiness.

That said. When we moved to Florida I sold our old sofa before we left. One less thing to move and I needed a visual change anyhow. Win win. Once we got to moved and settled it was my assumption that we would have all kinds of visitors and I have always loved the idea of being a good host, therefore we would need somewhere for our guests to sleep. So, we bought a gently loved red leather sofa sleeper that stowed a queen size bed for our loved ones to rest their heads on.

For the past year I have stared at this huge, heavy as hell piece of furniture that while it served its purpose for a place to plant our asses at the end of a busy day, it didn't do much else than sit there. We have had a handful of friends and family come to stay with us over the past 2 years and only 1 has actually pulled the damn thing out and slept on it more than one night. Kudos to my little sister! I tried to sleep on it once myself, it was horrible! Which at that point didn't do the poor thing any favors in my eyes.

As I have rebooted my drive to further declutter and minimize the items in our living space, I kept coming back to the sofa. We have had a recliner that my husband got for Christmas the year we got here. Everyone in the house takes turns jockeying for this chair. Again making the couch look unfavorable for keeping.

So, I had to ask myself, Why am I so resistant to get rid of this couch? After a lot of soul searching the only thing I could come up with is " Everyone has one". It's been ingrained on my brain for my entire 40 years. WTH? I have never been one to conform to a societal mold, why start now? If I remove the couch, what are we going to sit on? What are my guests going to sleep on? How do explain to visitors that look at my living room and wonder "Where the hell is her sofa?"

The answer was simple. We all get a recliner. His/her own to lounge and snuggle with the pups in. Done. Like I said before, Husband all ready had one. Fortunately, so did offspring (in his room acting like a coat rack) and me....Thrifty project time! I scored an older, smaller, fits-my-short-self-just-right recliner from a local thrift shop that just happen to be giving excess furniture away. Score! Then I cut up an old quilt, made a slip cover and BOOM! I have my own recliner also. Problem solved. Step 2...After removing the sofa, we can easily scoot the chairs to one side of the room and utilize the air mattresses we already have in our camping stash for out of town guests. Yes! Step 3....I have 2 people that visit us regularly and both know me well enough to know I'm not going to make them sit on the floor. Extra dining chairs can be brought in for short visits and reclining beach/camping chairs can be brought in if needed. Done. As for what other think of the my living room sans sofa....Honestly, I don't give a damn. Moving on!

The lesson is, if a couch doesn't work for your family's lifestyle....let it go! Break free from the assumption that your room will look incomplete with out one and don't judge someone that might not have one.
As for the red leather couch...it left yesterday to go live with a family that has 2 young son's that are going to camp out on it in there game room. I couldn't be more please!

Have you ever struggled with not wanting to let go of something as trivial as a piece of furniture that is a staple in most households these days? Have any comments, questions, stories you would like to share please leave them in the comments below.
I'm telling myself I will commit to a weekly post here, we'll see how that goes.

Well, it's been an interesting first half of 2016 so far. Lots going on.

We are in the process of painting the exterior of the house. I had hoped to complete it before the summer heat hit us, but unfortunately that did not happen. Now we are in rainy season which makes it difficult, but not undo-able. The body of the house is complete. The main wall of the screened porch (exterior house wall) is done also. The shed has been painted also. Left to do - front awning, ceiling of the porch & carport, all the gutters and carport supports. ( will update as we go, final before and after photos to come)

Offspring is at his final day of freshman year. I can't believe just how grown up he is getting. I am so very proud of the man he is becoming. Dean's list all year. He is amazing!

Projects: currently working on recovering a recliner, writing content for my new blog N2 Simply Veg, wrapping up misc. crafting that needs finished as well as odds and ends of random inside painting that i can do since it's SO freaking hot outside.

OH, AND I WENT VEGAN.
More on that over on the other other blog!

I hope life finds you well. Thank you for visiting!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02367148520987075260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1340459347736840694.post-45706402973990231242014-05-06T05:47:00.001-07:002014-05-06T06:26:36.844-07:00Mobile home love vs small mindedness
Three years ago when we bought our home we got a Lot of looks. Those looks that come from people that are stuck in the media driven stereotypical frame of mind....that mobile homes are where people live when they can't afford a stick built home, for whatever reason. This really pisses me off!

Here's the thing, my husband and I "chose" a mobile home for our first house together. We have also chosen a mobile home for our next house in Florida. Here's why, in the years we have been able to pay cash for two homes, eliminate all debt that had accumulated in our pre-3namehouse lives, and live comfortably in the mean time. How many couples (in their 30s) in this country can say that?

So I leave you with this thought...

Stick built home with a thirty plus year mortgage, that you have to kill yourself in job you hate, to pay it off....

Or a stick built home that happens to be mobile that can afford you to work a less demanding job and spend more time living.

So, this is what I have been doing the past month. In my OCD, over pre-pared brain it makes since to bring everything to the living room as it is packed so it takes less time to walk it to the truck on moving day. The kid and I are finishing up on this end, while husband is hard at work with training for his new job and getting our new house in order in Florida.

Now that all of the parents and grandparents have been personally told, I can reveal our next big adventure! (as my mother calls it)

3namehouse is moving! Not the blog, but it's humans. We recently sold our Ohio home and are pulling up roots to and heading south!

January 2013 we had taken a family trip to Florida to see family friends. And while both my husband and I have been to Florida in the summer, neither of us had been there in the winter. Let me tell you! As a kid who always had a snow storm on her birthday...I was in heaven! It took me 37 years to have a pool party for my birthday, who wouldn't want that?! After lots of discussion on the flight home about "having to go back to normal life" in cold Ohio. It was mentioned by offspring "Why do we have to go back?" This question planted a seed in Husband's and my brain. Now, in my entire life I had never pictured myself moving from Ohio. I pictured traveling and visiting far off places, but move? Well, never say never.

After a year of planning and putting the house on the market. We are ready!

It's been a long road coming. I will write about this later. Lots of ups and downs, highs and lows...it is a work out for the emotions!

In six weeks I will be writing from the beach. I am SO looking forward to the changes and new opportunities that await our lil family.

Side note: Does anyone have any advice on moving across country with a herd of dogs?

Twelve years ago he blessed my life with the uncertainty of being a new mom. After years of trying, he had finally came to my life. After many losses and much heartache I finally had my boy.

People ask me why I have put myself thru such loss. Miscarriage, sucks. There is no other way to put it. After my fifth, I decided it was enough. Until my divorce four years ago. After realizing that my ex was the one that couldn't physically have anymore children...not me. Maybe this was my chance at another blessing.
My current Husband has no children of his own. While he had stepped up dutifully as my son's Dad, we wanted to have one of our own. I'm six years his senior, at the time putting me in my mid thirties hoping time was still on my side.

I promised I would dedicate myself to giving this man a child until I turned 38. The past two years we have lost three babies. I have fought endometriosis. Had tumors removed. Done hormone replacement therepy. Dealt with my own feelings of failure as a wife and a woman. Oh, and the hormones had kicked of Fibromyalgia to boot! Fun times!

This past August I was told the endometriosis had returned. This time taking over my bladder, bowel, kidney and uterus. As I drove home from the doctors I was surprised by the light feeling I was experiencing. My body was fighting me. Mentally I was cooked. Overall I was relieved. I was ready for this rodeo to be done.

My biggest hurdle is still the fact I won't ever give my Husband his own child. But for me, life is much more precious. The light bulb went off! I have a son, that I am missing time with because of all the shit i'm putting my body thru to get pregnant. (insert the mental slap here) I'm ready to live my life, I want my body back and I don't want the emotional headache of wondering "am I" this month. No period for the rest of my life is a bonus!!

So, I booked a full abdominal hysterectomy for the first Friday of this year! I am three weeks post op and healing well.

From my couch I am enjoying my son and Husband as we make plans for our big move out of state this summer. Plans that include biking and kayaking and hiking and camping and all if the things I gave up the past two years.

My new motto "I'm uterus free and living life!"

Hopefully we will get it sold and check that off the TODO list!

Last January we went to Florida for my birthday to visit friends that had moved there the year before. We all had a fantastic time. On the flight back home my son said something that would change our lives forever.

"Why do we have to go back?" he questioned. Me in my post vaca stuper mumbled something about our "REAL" lives and work and school. But his question stayed with me. And my Husband. Once we got home terms like "What if....in Florida" were flying around our house.

So here is the big question...WHY CAN'T FLORIDA "BE" OUR REAL LIVES?

We were all thinking the same thing.... it was more than a dream that needed spoken.

A family meeting the week after we got home, our dreams became a spoken idea. It was unanimous, we wanted to move to Florida! Not just talk about it....actually doing it...moving to Florida?? It was fantastic and scary all at the same time! Plans were made and put into motion...

Pay off debt (or at least as much as possible) before the end of the year.
Purge all non-essential items that would not be making the move with us.
Tell friends and family our plan.
Put the house on the market.

CHECK, CHECK, CHECK AND CHECK!

Now we just wait for a bite on the house, Husband to finish up his Military duties and the Kid to finish 7th grade. It's going to be a long ass winter in Ohio, but if all goes well, it will be our last!

On a personal note, "Why move to Florida?, What if you get down there and don't like it?, Won't you miss your family?" - These questions have been thrown and my Husband and myself repeatedly. Here's the thing - We want to spend our birthdays and holidays on the beach! - We can always come back if it doesn't work out for whatever reason. - Of course we will miss our families & friends, but we have to do what is best for "our lil family"...And what kinda of role models would we be if we didn't show our son it was ok to act on a dream instead of spending your life wondering "What if I had".Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02367148520987075260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1340459347736840694.post-75729928924832766702013-10-28T06:40:00.001-07:002013-10-28T06:40:25.216-07:00Us lately...We have been doing a great deal around our little house lately. Meet Maizey. She is the newest member of our little family. Weighing in at just 4 pounds she has still proven she can hang with our bigger dogs! I will be writing more about her in the coming weeks - and explain why against all logic we got another dog.
Offspring is pulling straight As in school (as always). He went to his first dance this past Friday. Man my boy is growing up.
It was a costume dance....Can you tell who he went as? He had a good time and seem relieved that he could mark that off his "firsts" list.
We went to the Pumpkin show in Circleville! Had a blast watch Bug and his best bud AJ ride the mechanical bull! Besides sitting for 2 hours in traffic to get there...we all had a great time!

And I have an announcement, but you will have to see the next post for that...
Bug has been interested in firearms for as long as I can remember. He bought his first gun encyclopedia when he was 2.

Fast forward 10 years and enter minimalism.

You get a young man with a creative streak that chooses to make his own toys guns

out of cardboard instead of clutter his room with bulky plastic ones.

Don't get me wrong we have our share of Nerf guns BUT

as Bug explains

"I am using my imagination and ingenuity,

keeping boxes out of a landfill,

and making something that can still be recycled when I'm done playing"

How can I say no to that?

This is my finest creation. We call him Bug. He turned 12 last Friday.

Three years ago, if you would have asked him what he wanted for his birthday - he may have responded with a list of toys he didn't need or things he wanted because one of the neighborhood boys had one.

Minimalism suits my boy. From the beginning I have been upfront with him about my goals to de-clutter our lives and listened openly to his suggestions and input along the way. It took him a bit longer to get on board applying minimalism to his own "stuff"...but I saw a change in his "wants" fairly quick.

He stopped asking for things on a regular basis and he adhered to the new house rule (one-in-one-out). He has also taken to searching ebay and shopgoodwill.com for secondhand items he desires. He has passed up the chance to upgrade his phone this year..."my current one does everything I need, Momma". HE HAS BEEN LISTENING!!

This year when I asked my son what he desired for his birthday. I received a list of 5 things. Most he has been saving his money for. There was only one toy on the list and the rest he could use for many years if not the rest of his life. I was told though that he would prefer a birthday party over anything. One like we had when he was very little. With the whole family! This is to be his last birthday in Ohio. We are moving south this coming spring.

So, That is just what we did! A surprise party at the park! All the grandparents (there are 5), family friends, cousins, aunt & uncle, his best friend (see pic below) and his parents (Papa, Momma & his Dad).

After a Friday night of storms and wind, the skies cleared 20 minutes before the guests arrived! It was the day I imagined all week long. He thanked us multiple times that evening. And he promptly went home and purged 10 items to make room for his new micro stereo, toy Barrett and the vintage Hubley cap gun he had been watching on ebay for months!

HAPPY #12 MY BOY! YOU MAKE MOMMA PROUD!
For as long as I can remember my mother always had a project going. Painting, stain glass, crafts with the kids etc. And while her mediums have changed over the years her creativity hasn't. My sister and I got worried when her cancer hit a little over a year ago. She lost her desire to create art. And anyone who makes anything knows this a very lonely place to be in one's mind.

After her six month check-up and a family miracle - She has found her new inspiration in paper & thrifted frames. SO I HAD TO GIVE HER A SHOUT OUT!
REDBUD RANCH 2013

This is the closest I can get to going home to the family farm. My Aunt Poppy & Unc Ed have taken this place from a 1.5 bedroom cottage to a rustic beauty that has inspired me in my own tiny home journey. ALL of the wood siding, fencing, mill work was done by my Uncle. The trees taken off the land and used in the expanding of the main house which now includes a summer kitchen and a few screened outdoor living areas, even a root cellar. All allowing access to my Aunt's garden and hen house. Growing up around here consisted of cannoe rides, bunny runs, picnics on pine hill, camping the summer nights away all of my cousins. It is awesome to see it transform over the years. I strive to raise my boy with the values I learned here. And that the land provides all you need to live and grow and play. Trees do build a home, earth to grow food, woods to roam.

Redbud is just around the corner from my grammy and grampy's farm where they raised their girls (all 6 of them!) and Gpa took us grandkids shooting and hiking when we where young.

This is as close to the family farm as I can get these days. Going to Poppy & Ed's is my way of going home. I am thankful I can share that with my son.
An F250 hauling a 15ft trailer decided to park in Husband's back seat while he was stopped in traffic. Roxy was totaled. SO, car shopping we went...again, six weeks after we baught her! OH, and yes Husband is ok. A little bumped up...but very lucky.

So, Husband's truck blew up last week...which didn't help or budget planning for the end of the year. After thorough research on a price to fix it, we came up with a win/win.
The truck is bring sold to our mechanic, yay recycling! And Husband gets a Jeep that is well in side our budget and saving for our future move is still doable...
Enter Roxie.... (yes, I name our vehicles,, makes filling paperwork much more fun!)

The carpet has been the soar spot of our household since we moved in. The youngest member of our household has asthma induced by allergies. We have 2 dogs and a cat, which thankfully he is not allergic to, BUT they carry in dust and allergens that he is sensitive too. Between Husband and myself the carpet was getting vacuumed EVERYDAY (major time suck!) And I am not all than fond of vacuuming anyway. Sooooooooo, when a friend of mine offered us some recycled composit (yay green living) at a fantastic price (yay budget friendly!), offered to show me how to install it and was on call for any follow up questions, I couldn't say no!

It took a full week of working after work every evening and 2 full weekends...We have new flooring in the dog's room, hall way and living room. It was truly a family project. Husband pulled out carpet, Offspring pulled staples and I followed along with new floor.

I am so happy with the outcome! One trip around the house with a dry dust mop per day

instead of 30 minutes vacuuming, YES PLEASE!

Sorry this post was delayed, I have been wearing this 33 for a lil over a month now.

While most are good picks, I am finding I wear about half of what I chose.

So, I need to tweak my selection for the rest of the summer.

I am hacking up old clothes and making new items out of them so I will leave a few spots

open in my list to try these out in my daily life.

Keep ya posted!

ps: I have been kicking around the idea that picking 40-59 items for year round wear may suit me

better...with switch ups allowed every other month. Less in and out or storage and and less to store!

Ok, my neighbor have me this sad little bike, the seat was broken, brakes didn't work, tires were flat.
BUT IT FOLDS UP!!! So, of to my friends at a local bike repair it went. Once home I replaced the seat (go tools!!!) and cleaned her up.
I look at it this way. Yes, I already have a trike. No the trike can't go camping with me (enter new foldy bike). Yes, I had to pot some money into it, but it didn't go to the dump! And it was way cheaper than buying new. Score!!!
PS. It matches my lil car, Lucy. AND IT FOLDS UP!!!!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02367148520987075260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1340459347736840694.post-84805712884811432562013-05-07T09:48:00.000-07:002013-05-07T09:48:27.635-07:00Project 333 - my new way of dealing with my wardrobeI recently found this fantastic concept of controlling your minimal wardrobe without feeling restricted. I love this idea (thank you Courtney Carver) you utilize 33 items in your wardrobe, packing the rest away until the next 3 month cycle (for details please go here)!!!

The bonus for me, MY SON HAS DECIDED TO JOIN ME!
He has been tossing around the idea of creating his own "uniform" for a while now. After I did the 6 item challenge a few months ago, he starting asking lots of questions about his clothing and who makes it, why fads are fads and people give in to them etc. (I love watching my child's brain grow!)

I still need to take pictures of his 33. I will post mine shortly.

We did adjust a couple of the rules a little to fit our life. We are limiting our pj's and lounge ware to 3 outfits - as we both sleep and exercise in the same clothes. And we aren't really counting jewelry as items because we both wear the same jewelry every single day.

Bug - wears a ring his great Grammy got him for Christmas and a set of dog tags my Soldier Husband gifted him the first Christmas we started dating.

I - wear my wedding set (obviously), a pearl necklace, and silver hoops (my Grampy gave me before he passed).
Needless to say we both are pretty minimal in our jewelry. BUT, I have a scarf thing...Not sure what to call it. So, to make sure I reigned that addiction - I made sure to add them into my 33. Will power! HAHA!!

Please feel free to join us on our Project 333 challenge! More info to come!
I highly recommend checking out Relay for Life, or the American Cancer Society to see how you can participate in a local event or donate to the cause.

I bet you or someone you love has been effected by cancer....

Help us stop it in it's tracks.

These once were my boots...

They had a good life. I got them second hand from a friend (love!). Wore them almost daily for 2 plus years. Until they are literally falling apart. What is a girl to do?

Well, a crafty mom of a little boy who LOVES all things guns - that has been requesting a double holster for his match handguns - cuts up her once loved boots and makes a holster for her child...

That's just what I did...

AND he loves it!

Yay!! it's a win-win!

Nothing in the land fill, he gets a new toy,
